The search giant is to make its own digital games for consoles and PCs.
The company said on Thursday that it had signed an agreement with the makers of Crytek to produce and distribute its own content.
Google will make its games playable on PC through a partnership with the developers of CryEngine, a game engine for creating games.
Crytek is the publisher of Crysis, a high-definition 3D graphics game.
Google said it would sell the games through the Google Play Store and Google Play Games.
“Our goal is to bring the most exciting games to Google Play and to our community of users around the world,” said Greg McBride, senior vice president of Android and Google’s mobile devices group.
“We are excited to partner with this industry leader, which is known for creating high-quality, high-value mobile apps and games.”
Google said that its games would be released to the public on Google Play at a later date.
“I think what we’re really excited about is the ability to partner and bring games to people who may not have the opportunity to play them on their own,” McBride said.
The games will be made by a team that includes Crytek and Crytek co-founder Pavel Durov.
Google has been working with Durovs since the start of the project, in 2013, and has seen a lot of interest in the games.
The Google Play store currently has about 1.6 million games, but Google said in a blog post on Thursday the company had received more than 100,000 submissions from developers around the globe.
Google is aiming to have the first games on the platform by the end of the year, according to McBride.
He added that the company planned to release some of the games on a weekly basis.
The first game will be a sequel to the hit mobile game Clash Royale, a popular online multiplayer game that has been downloaded more than a billion times.
The second game will focus on the popular puzzle game Googly Googly.
Google announced plans to make more games this year, as it expands its offerings for mobile devices, but it is still not clear whether it will release any more than one game a week.
Google already has the rights to games from developers like Epic Games and ZeniMax, but the deal with Crytek would give it the right to develop its own original games.
McBride added that Google had no plans to partner directly with publishers, and would only make money from the sale of the apps.
“This is a very exciting day for Google,” said Chris Mays, director of Google Play for Android and the developer of the game CryEngine.
“It’s a great way for us to create new content for Google Play, which currently supports a few hundred million games and we’ll be able to give more developers access to our platform.”
Microsoft’s Xbox 360 game console is widely considered to be the first major digital entertainment console.
Microsoft said last year that it planned to sell as many as 300 million Xbox 360 consoles by the year 2020.
Microsoft bought the console maker, which was then known as Gameloft, in 2014 for $7.5 billion.
