By MICHAEL GOLDBERG and BRUCE WESTON, Associated PressMicrosoft Inc. said Tuesday that it’s developing a new software-defined networking (SDN) system that it says will allow it to “implement” the capabilities of its Surface RT tablets in new ways, including using wireless technologies to stream data and access cloud services.
The company has also begun developing its own hardware-powered versions of its software, a move that could open up a new front for the technology, which is in the early stages of development.
Microsoft said it has tested the new SDN system and has “found it to be robust, flexible, and scalable” in a blog post.
The company said that it has “a clear path to delivering this technology into products,” and that it expects to have a prototype product “within a few months.”
The company also said it is working with partners to bring the SDN technology to other devices and applications, including the Xbox gaming console, Windows 10 and the upcoming Oculus Rift virtual reality headset.
